I’ve always thought that the house of Lannister is supposed to derived from the Latin word lanista, which means a trader, trainer and owner of slaves and gladiators. I’ve never known if that’s Mr Martin’s the intention, though.

  1. I like how you have the association of Lannister with Lanista, but their name probably owes more to the Lancasters of England. It’s been said that England’s War of the Roses was the inspiration for A Game of Thrones, and the two families involved in that conflict were the rich Lancasters and the northern Yorks, which seems to translate well into Lannisters and Starks.

    But again, I like your alternative explanation.
